Why I Don’t Believe in Restrictions or Fad Diets for Sustainable Weight Loss

When it comes to lasting health and weight loss, I don’t believe in restrictions — and I definitely don’t believe in fad diets.

Every time we restrict ourselves, it backfires. When we label certain foods as bad or off-limits, we give them unnecessary power. We start thinking about them more, craving them more, and eventually, restriction leads to overeating, guilt, and burnout.

Why Restriction Doesn’t Work

Restriction creates an unhealthy relationship with food. It teaches us to fear certain foods instead of learning how to enjoy them in balance.

Here’s the truth: there are no bad foods.

It’s not about what we eat — it’s about how, when, and how much we eat that matters most.

In my home, I have candy jars. I have chips. I have all the snacky things. But I also have plenty of whole, nutrient-dense foods. The key isn’t removing the fun foods — it’s learning to prioritize and balance them.

We fill up first on the high-protein, high-fiber foods that keep us full and satisfied, and then we enjoy the other foods in moderation.

That’s what sustainable weight loss looks like.

When you focus on whole foods — those packed with nutrients and volume — you naturally feel more satisfied. And when you feel full, you think less about food, stay more consistent, and stop battling the hunger and cravings that derail so many diets.

Why Fad Diets Fail Every Time

Fad diets promise fast results, but they never last.

Anything that requires you to cut out entire food groups, skip meals, or completely change your lifestyle overnight simply isn’t sustainable.

If a diet doesn’t allow you to go out to dinner, attend a party, or enjoy a vacation without stress — it’s not the right plan for you.

Real life involves flexibility, and your nutrition should too.

Fad diets often lead to burnout, fatigue, and frustration because they’re not built for real life. They might help you lose weight quickly, but they rarely teach you how to eat in a way that supports your hormones, metabolism, and energy — especially as you move into midlife.
